Why learn a Martial Art?
There are a hundreds reasons to learn martial arts, and it is up to you decide which best fit you, what is your aim or reason for starting in the first place?
Martial arts can be broken down in to in to many aspects, physical, mental and even in some cases spiritual, but the reason for starting any new Martial Art will be a very personal one.
If you are looking for a way to stay in shape that does not consist of going to the gym every day, doing the boxercise or spin class and feeling intimidated or uncomfortable when you first enter the Gym, then maybe learning a Martial Art would be right for you. Saying all that, the Gym, is a fantastic place to go and get in shape, but if your self-confidence is a little low then maybe learning a Martial Art is the first step in getting in to shape before going to the Gym.
Depending on the Martial Art you choose to study, then the exercises you do will differ, all aspects of the chosen style will be different, from the warm up to the warm down. Kickboxing will be different from Thai Boxing, which will be different from Wing Chun, then there will be your current physical condition, age and flexibility to take in to account.
Remember attackers prey on the weak. Confidence can be one of the best shield against violence. And I am not talking about puffing out your chest or making threats. Real confidence comes from within and training in a Martial Art will give you both physical and mental training. Confidence cannot be faked, well not easily!
In addition to the physical benefits of martial arts, there are emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects as well as mentioned before.
Wing Chun is a unique in quite a few ways in as much that it does not rely on physical strength or size to be “good at the style” nor does it require you to be super flexible to be able to do the moves, not that I am knocking either size or flexibility, but in the event of ever being attacked, say on a cold evening in the middle of November do you really have time to “warm up”, stretch and then do a jumping, spinning round house kick?

When looking at martial arts training, always make sure you have a clear reason for starting, what goal you are aim for and most importantly you are enjoying the training you are doing. Please do not spend either your time or your hard earned money on a system that does not suit you just because you think you have to or the instructor is almost trying to “make you” stay on, even if you don’t want to stay.
Wing Chun offers a highly effective and practical street self-protection system and no nonsense approach to self-defence. Wing Chun Halesowen Kuen is proud to offer authentic Wing Chun Kuen from Sifu Alan through the Ip Man lineage via Chief Instructor Sifu Shaun Rawcliffe.
