Wing Chun is a practical Chinese martial art that focuses on direct movement, clever positioning and efficient self defence. It was developed to help a smaller person defend against a larger one by using structure, timing, and technique rather than strength. Today it is known around the world for its close range skills, relaxed but powerful strikes and calm, focused approach to dealing with pressure.
At Wing Chun Halesowen, we teach traditional Wing Chun as passed down from Sifu Shaun Rawcliffe and the Ip Chun lineage. Our training aims to help every student build confidence, discipline and a clear understanding of how to protect themselves in real situations. The art is suitable for men and women of all ages because it does not rely on force, but instead uses body mechanics and simple, effective movements.
Key Principles of Wing Chun
Centreline Theory
Wing Chun protects the centre of your body where most attacks are aimed. Students learn to defend and counter along this line with speed and accuracy.
Simplicity and Efficiency
Every technique is designed to be direct. There are no flashy movements, only clear, efficient answers that work under pressure.
Relaxation and Structure
Wing Chun teaches you to stay calm, keep your structure and use the opponent’s force to your advantage. This helps students handle stress with confidence.
Simultaneous Defence and Attack
Instead of blocking first and striking later, Wing Chun blends defence and attack into one movement. This creates rapid responses that feel natural once trained.
The Forms of Wing Chun
Wing Chun has three empty-hand forms, a wooden dummy form, and traditional weapons. Each form builds a different part of the system:
Siu Nim Tao
The foundation of all techniques. Students learn the structure, relaxation, and core shapes of the system.
Chum Kiu
Teaches movement, turning, stepping and how to generate power through the body.
Biu Jee
Focuses on recovery skills and emergency techniques.
Muk Yan Jong (Wooden Dummy)
Develops precision, angles, footwork and close-range power.
