Walk into one of our adult classes and you’ll notice something straight away: almost everyone is wearing the same T-shirt. It isn’t a coincidence, and it isn’t about fashion. The club T-shirt is our uniform. This article explains what it is, why we have one and what new members need to know about it.
A simple uniform
Many martial arts have elaborate uniforms: heavy jackets, specific trousers and coloured grading markers. Wing Chun has always been more practical. At our school, the uniform is simply a club T-shirt worn with comfortable training trousers. It’s easy to wear, easy to wash and suits the close-range, arm-heavy nature of Wing Chun training.
New students don’t need a uniform for their first class. Comfortable clothes are fine. Once you join as a member, you’ll wear the club T-shirt in class.
The Starter T-shirt
The Official Wing Chun Halesowen Starter T-shirt is our core uniform shirt, designed for new students and everyday training. It’s a heavyweight, garment-dyed tee with a relaxed fit, which means:
- Freedom of movement for stances, punches and chi sau, with nothing pulling across the shoulders.
- Durability through regular training and washing. It’s pre-shrunk, so it keeps its fit.
- A soft, broken-in feel from the first wear, thanks to the garment-dyed finish.
The Summer Training T-shirt
For warmer evenings, the Official Wing Chun Halesowen Summer Training T-shirt is a lighter option. It’s made from ring-spun cotton at a lighter weight than the Starter tee, which helps on those summer nights when the training floor warms up. Like much of our clothing, it’s made to order, with only a small amount of stock held, so allow a little time for delivery or collection.
Why a uniform matters
Belonging
When everyone wears the same shirt, there’s an immediate sense of being part of something. New members often tell me that putting on the club T-shirt for the first time made them feel like a proper member of the school.
Equality
A uniform removes distractions. Nobody is judged by designer labels or expensive kit. On the training floor, everyone is simply a student.
Respect
Wearing the club shirt is a small sign of respect for the school, the art and your training partners. It says you’re here to train seriously.
Practicality
Wing Chun involves a lot of close arm contact. A well-fitting cotton T-shirt without zips, buttons or hoods is ideal for partner work and chi sau. Nothing catches, nothing scratches.
What else do members wear?
- Trousers: comfortable training trousers or tracksuit bottoms that allow a bent-knee stance.
- Sash: students wear their grading sash, starting with white.
- Layers: on cold evenings, a base layer under the club shirt is popular.
Children’s uniform
Junior students have their own shirt, which I’ve covered in a parent’s guide to kids’ Wing Chun T-shirts.
A note on the logo
The club shirt carries the school’s own branding rather than a lifestyle design, and that’s deliberate. When you wear it, you’re representing the school, whether that’s on the training floor, at a demonstration or on the walk back to the car. It’s a nice feeling to see someone in the same shirt and know they train where you do, and it’s a gentle reminder to carry yourself with the same respect outside the centre as you do inside it.
Looking after your club shirt
- Wash after every session.
- Turn it inside out to protect the print.
- Follow the care label for temperature.
- Avoid tumble drying where possible to keep the shape.
- Keep a spare if you train several evenings a week.
Common questions
When should I buy my club shirt?
Once you’ve tried a class and decided to join. There’s no need to buy anything before your first session.
How many do I need?
If you train twice a week, one shirt is usually enough. If you train most evenings, a second one saves a lot of midweek washing.
Is there a women’s cut?
Yes. Alongside the relaxed-fit starter shirt, there’s a Ladies Official Training T-shirt in combed ring-spun cotton, if you’d like a more fitted option.
Where to get one
Club T-shirts are available through our online shop. If you’re not sure about sizing, ask us at the centre and we’ll help. Remember that our clothing is often made to order, so it’s worth ordering a little ahead of when you need it.
Wear it with pride
The club T-shirt is simple, but it represents something bigger: a school built on respect, hard work and a shared love of Wing Chun. If you’d like to earn your place in one, book your free trial class, or read more about how we train on our Wing Chun classes in Halesowen page. Just bring comfortable clothes for your first session.
