Some designs are just pictures. Others carry meaning. When we created the Celestial Dragon Heavyweight Graphic Tee for our TrackAndTrainStudio range, we wanted a piece that martial artists could wear with pride, and that would spark a conversation about the ideas behind it. This article explains the symbolism in the design and the details of the shirt itself.
The dragon in Chinese culture
In Western stories, dragons are often monsters to be slain. In Chinese culture, the dragon is something very different. It’s a symbol of power, wisdom, good fortune and harmony with nature. Dragons are associated with water and the sky, bringing rain and renewal. For centuries, the dragon was linked with emperors and seen as a guardian.
In martial arts, the dragon represents a particular kind of power: not brute force, but strength combined with flexibility, control and awareness. That balance is something every martial artist strives for.
The front: the 龍 seal
On the front left chest is a small cinnabar red calligraphic seal of the character 龍, which means dragon. Traditional Chinese seals, or chops, have been used for centuries to sign documents and artworks. The red colour, known as cinnabar, is associated with good fortune and vitality.
Below the seal sits the T&T Studio mark, which identifies our TrackAndTrainStudio designs. The front is deliberately understated, so the shirt works just as well for everyday wear as it does at a martial arts event.
The back: a dragon breaking through the Enso
The main artwork is on the upper back: a coiled golden celestial dragon breaking through a traditional sumi-e ink-brush circle.
Sumi-e
Sumi-e is a style of East Asian ink-wash painting that values simplicity, spontaneity and expressing the essence of a subject with just a few brushstrokes.
The Enso circle
The Enso is a circle painted in a single brushstroke. It’s associated with Zen Buddhism and is often seen as a symbol of enlightenment, strength, elegance and the universe. It’s also a lesson in commitment: once the brush touches the paper, there’s no going back.
Breaking through
The image of the dragon breaking through the circle can be read in many ways. For me, it represents a martial artist moving beyond their limits, breaking through to the next level of skill and understanding. Every student knows that feeling of a sudden breakthrough after months of patient practice.
Why these ideas matter in training
Wing Chun doesn’t have a dragon form in the way some other kung fu styles do, but the qualities the dragon represents are central to our training. We aim for power that comes from relaxation and structure, not tension. We value awareness and adaptability. And we understand that real progress comes through steady, committed practice, much like the single brushstroke of the Enso.
The shirt itself
- Fabric: 100% garment-dyed heavyweight cotton, with a vintage washed, broken-in feel.
- Fit: relaxed and unisex.
- Construction: durable double-needle stitching.
- Design: cinnabar red 龍 seal and T&T Studio mark on the front; fine-art golden dragon and Enso circle on the back.
It’s designed as a lifestyle piece rather than a training uniform. Our club T-shirt is what members wear in class, while the Celestial Dragon tee is for wearing to and from training, at events or simply day to day.
Who wears it?
The design was created with martial artists in mind, but you don’t need to train to appreciate it. Students wear it to and from class, to gradings and seminars, and on ordinary days out. Friends and family members of our students have bought it too, simply because they like the artwork. It also makes a thoughtful gift for anyone with an interest in Chinese art or philosophy. If you like this design, you might also enjoy the Tiger & Crane Duality tee and the Biomechanical Blueprint tee, which share the same heavyweight garment-dyed cotton and red seal detail.
Caring for your tee
- Wash inside out to protect the print.
- Use a cool or warm wash, following the care label.
- Avoid tumble drying to keep the print and shape at their best.
- Don’t iron directly over the design.
Where to find it

A design with a story
When someone asks about the dragon on your back, you’ll have a story to tell: about power and wisdom, about the single brushstroke of the Enso, and about breaking through your own limits. That’s what we wanted from this design, and why it’s one of my favourites in the range.
