Few things worry a parent more than finding out their child is being bullied. You want to fix it, and you want your child to feel safe and strong again. Martial arts are often suggested, and for good reason. But it’s worth being clear about what a good martial arts class does and doesn’t do for a child facing bullying.
At our school, we don’t teach children to fight back in the playground. We teach them to stand tall, speak clearly, notice what’s going on around them and walk away with confidence. Physical skills sit underneath all of that, as a safety net rather than a first resort.
Why bullies pick certain children
Bullying is never the child’s fault. That said, children who are targeted often share some signs of low confidence: looking at the floor, hunched shoulders, a quiet voice, or seeming unsure what to do when challenged. Changing those signals won’t solve everything, but it can make a real difference.
What Wing Chun builds
Posture
From their very first class, children learn to stand upright and balanced in the Wing Chun stance. Over time that upright posture carries into everyday life. A child who stands tall and looks people in the eye simply looks less like an easy target.
Voice
We encourage children to use a strong, clear voice. Saying “Stop” or “Leave me alone” loudly and firmly is a skill, and it needs practice. In class, children practise it in a safe setting until it feels natural.
Awareness
We talk about noticing situations early, keeping a sensible distance and staying near trusted adults and friends. Awareness is the first layer of self-defence for everyone, and it’s especially important for children.
Knowing when to walk away
Walking away isn’t weakness. We make that very clear. A child who can calmly leave a situation and tell a teacher or parent is doing exactly the right thing.
Calm under pressure
Sparring is part of our children’s class, and it plays a useful role here. It’s age-appropriate, controlled and closely supervised, with rules suited to each child’s age and ability. Its purpose isn’t aggression. It helps children learn to stay calm when someone is moving towards them, keep their guard up and think clearly instead of freezing. That experience of staying composed under a little pressure is something many children who have been bullied have never had.
Partners are matched carefully, and instructors step in immediately if anything isn’t controlled. Every child learns that the person in front of them is a training partner to be respected.
Confidence without aggression
Some parents worry that martial arts might make a child more aggressive. In our experience it’s the opposite. Children who know they can look after themselves have nothing to prove. Respect is built into every class: we bow in and out, we look after our partners and we speak kindly about others. Rough behaviour isn’t tolerated.
The confidence children gain comes from real achievements: learning a new movement, earning a sash, helping a newer student. Those are the building blocks of self-esteem.
A safe environment
Children who have been bullied need to feel safe before they can grow. Our classes are run by DBS-checked instructors, and our Designated Safeguarding Lead is Mike Crump. You can read our safeguarding policies on the website. Parents are welcome to watch from our viewing area, which helps nervous children settle in.
We’re also a family-run, SEN-friendly school with BMABA SENCO recognition. If your child needs extra support or a gentler start, tell us and we’ll plan for it.
What parents can do alongside training
- Keep talking to your child’s school. Martial arts complement school support; they don’t replace it.
- Praise effort, not just results. Turning up to class when you’re nervous is brave.
- Practise the “strong voice” at home, so it becomes a habit.
- Ask your child what they learned. Teaching you a movement reinforces it for them.
How to get started
Our children’s class is for children aged 5 to 11 and runs Monday to Friday, 6:00 pm to 6:55 pm. Your child just needs comfortable clothes and a bottle of water.
