If you’ve typed “Wing Chun Stourbridge” into a search engine, you’re probably after one of two things: a proper Wing Chun club close to home, or a class your child can start without a long trek every weeknight. I’ll be straight with you from the start. We don’t run classes in Stourbridge itself. Our club is in Halesowen, at a full-time training centre on Stourbridge Road, and it’s within reach of Stourbridge.
I founded Wing Chun Halesowen in 2013, and I’ve been training in martial arts since 1989. In this post I’ll explain why our Halesowen centre is a natural option if you live in or around Stourbridge, what training looks like for adults and children, and how to try a class for free.
Looking for Wing Chun near Stourbridge?
Wing Chun is a traditional Chinese martial art built around close-range self-protection, good structure and relaxed, efficient movement. It suits people who want something practical and thoughtful rather than flashy. Because it relies on technique and timing rather than size or strength, adults of all ages start it from scratch, including complete beginners in their fifties.
The difficulty is finding a club that teaches it properly, consistently, and at times that fit around work and school. That’s where a little extra distance can be worth it. A club that trains every weekday evening, in its own space, gives you far more chances to build a habit than an occasional class in a borrowed room.
Our Wing Chun comes through the Ip Man lineage, via Grandmaster Ip Chun and Sifu Shaun Rawcliffe of the Midlands Wing Chun Kuen. That matters to me, because it means students learn the system in a clear order rather than a random collection of techniques.
Why our Halesowen centre suits Stourbridge students
As the name suggests, our address on Stourbridge Road puts us on the road that heads out from Halesowen towards Stourbridge. You’ll find us at Unit 1C, Eagle Trading Estate, Stourbridge Road, Halesowen B63 3UA. If you need help finding the way in, our driving directions page has the details.
A few things make the centre a good fit for anyone coming over from the Stourbridge side:
- It’s a full-time training centre, not a rented church hall. The space is set up for martial arts all week, with a 130 square metre training area and traditional equipment including a wooden dummy and wall bags.
- There’s parking. That makes a big difference when you’re coming straight from work or doing the school run.
- Parents have a viewing area. If your child trains with us, you can sit and watch exactly what they’re doing.
- Classes run every weekday evening. Monday to Friday, so if one night doesn’t work, another usually will.
We’re a family-run, SEN-friendly club, and we’re proud to hold BMABA SENCO recognition for inclusive teaching. The centre is also within reach of Dudley, Cradley Heath and Hagley. You can read more about the space itself in our post on our Wing Chun training centre in Halesowen.
What adult training looks like
The adults’ class welcomes students from age 12, and no parent needs to train alongside them. Adult classes run Monday to Thursday from 7:15pm to 8:15pm, and Friday from 7:05pm to 8:05pm.
In your first class you’ll work on basic stances and footwork, get an introduction to Siu Nim Tao (the first Wing Chun form), and try some partner drills for coordination. As you progress, you’ll move on to Chum Kiu and Biu Tze, and later the wooden dummy and weapons. Partner training for adults is based on applications: applying techniques with a partner in a controlled way, so you understand why each movement works.
Progress is structured. Adults move through numbered club grades, from 1 to 9, so you always know what you’re working towards. Questions are encouraged at every stage. For more detail, see our adult Wing Chun classes page.
What children’s training looks like
Our children’s classes are for ages 5 to 11 and run Monday to Friday from 6:00pm to 6:55pm. Children learn stances, footwork and hand techniques, and work towards coloured sash gradings. Age-appropriate sparring is part of the kids’ class, always controlled and supervised and suited to each child’s age and ability.
Many parents are looking for something that builds confidence, focus and respect as well as fitness. Those things grow naturally from regular practice and clear goals, and the sash system gives children something to aim for from their very first lesson. You can find out more on our children’s Wing Chun classes page.
Classes run as normal this October half-term
If you’re thinking of starting soon, the October half-term is a good moment. Both the children’s and adults’ classes run as normal all week, so any weekday evening works for a first visit. If you’d like a few ideas for keeping children active over the break, have a look at our post on October half-term activities for kids in Halesowen.
Your free trial class
Your first class is a free trial, and no equipment is needed. Comfortable clothing, such as tracksuit bottoms and a T-shirt or hoodie, is perfect. You’ll be welcomed, shown the basics at your own pace and given plenty of encouragement. Our post on what to wear and bring to your first Wing Chun class covers everything you need to know before you arrive.
If you or your child has additional needs, or you’d simply like a chat before booking, give me a ring first. I’m always happy to talk things through.
